Today Finnegan made his debut! For those three people who voted that Finnegan would arrive at week 38 good for you!!
He made his grand entrance into the world at 2:24 am this morning. He weighed 6 lbs 3 ounces and is 20 inches long.
BIRTH STORY (don't worry, it isn't graphic)
Yesterday Mommy went to the hospital for a second biophysical profile because she had been diagnosed with preeclampsia and needed to be monitored closely
In the end it was determined that the only way to get Mommy's blood pressure back to normal was to deliver Finnegan early via induction. The first drips of Pitocin (a drug used to stimulate uterine contractions)coursed through Mommy's veins at 2:30 pm.
Mommy was also given Magnesium Sulfate to prevent the possibility of a seizure (due to the blood pressure) during labor. Unfortunately one of the (many) side effects of Magnesium Sulfate is to relax smooth muscles (the uterus is a smooth muscle) which slows labor dramatically. Mommy learned this all too well as at 10:30 pm there was still no baby and the decision was made to rupture the amniotic sac.
THAT got things moving! Soon after midnight the contractions really started picking up and by 1:30 am Mommy started begging for pain relief (Mommy wasn't allowed to labor in any position except lying down because of the Magnesium Sulfate making her extremely unsteady). Finally around 2:10 am (no epidural) Mommy felt like she needed to push and after a few (what felt like too many!) contractions Finnegan made his grand entrance at 2:24 am! Happy Birthday Finnegan!
